Developing Self-Discipline

Disciplining the mind and body

Self-discipline can be considered as the act of discipline or the power to discipline one's own feeling, desires, etc especially with the intention of improving oneself.

Of the many skills man possesses, self-discipline is the most important, yet most individuals are weak in this area. First and foremost for an individual to develop self-discipline, he/she has to know what is it they need most in life, after which they would condition their mind and body to achieve them. For example, to live a healthy lifestyle a person has to perform the act of self-discipline by eating healthy and exercising until it becomes a habit in which it would no longer require conscious thoughts.

Self-discipline doesn't happen overnight, it takes time, focus, inner strength, determination, and self-motivation. Procrastination is a bad recipe for self-discipline; it has to be a continuous practice, even when you feel de-motivated or devastated because of circumstances and challenges.

Characteristics of self-discipline are:

1. Self-control over mind and body

2. The ability to resist temptation and distraction

3. The ability to start over when confronted with failure

Meanwhile, characteristics of indiscipline are:

1. Bad habits, which if left alone will ruin all perspective of success

2. Behavioral problem which may result in negative lifestyle

3. Acting rashly without thinking, this will lead to failure

4. Laziness is an ambition killer, it will make you sit down and don't want to get up

The breeding of these bad characteristics begins in the mind and can only be exterminated by the changing of our thought pattern.

Finally, in order to discipline yourself, you have look at the gap between where you are and where you want to reach. It's like a sandwich; the inside ingredients completes it. The emphasis is placed on the inside. likewise, we have to be self-disciplined enough to focus on what matters most. Always keep your eyes on the goal.

The body is just like any other mechanical machine except that it is more complex, and is created by a supreme God and not an ordinary man. Every mechanical machine when broken has to be repaired by an experienced person but when it comes to the human body it has it own self-repairable mechanism once it is properly maintained.
